ISME has called on the government to reduce the numbers working in the civil service by 7,500, describing the increasing cost of the public sector as "a tightening noose around the neck of the exchequer."

The recommendation was made as part of the Irish Small and Medium Enterprises Association's pre-budget submission to Brian Cowen, the minister for finance.
