Irish farmers frown on G8 plan on Africa

The Irish Farmer's Association is hitting out at the G8 deal to combat poverty in Africa.

The agreement, which was signed by world leaders at the end of a three-day summit in Scotland yesterday, includes a plan to cut EU farm subsidies to allow Africans to compete on a level playing field.

The IFA says this will not improve the situation.

The group's President John Dillion says it will force African farmers to sell their produce at a very low price.

“Really the people that will benefit from this are corporate people, not farmers,” he said.

“We have seen that the coffee producers are getting very little, while the consumers are still paying the same, so it is the people in between that are going to win out of these proposals."
