The challenge of reviving the fortunes of high street icon Marks & Spencer was laid bare today by a 19% fall in annual profits.

M&S said profits dropped to £618.5m (€900m) during a turbulent year which saw a complete overhaul of management and a takeover approach from retail tycoon Philip Green.
