The FTSE 100 Index slumped to its lowest level in nearly three months today as worries over the US economy left investors running for cover.

Heavy losses by New York’s Dow Jones Industrial Average had an impact on markets worldwide and pushed the Footsie 57.9 points lower at 4833.7 by lunchtime – although it recovered from an earlier low of 96.8 points.
