Speculation that broadcaster ITV could be a takeover target helped push the FTSE 100 Index further past the 4800 barrier today.

Upbeat statements from Plumb Center chain Wolseley and fashion retailer Monsoon also lifted the mood on a relatively quiet day for corporate news.
