Rice production climbs but still not enough

Global rice production this year is estimated to soar to a near record of 611 million tons, but still will not be enough to meet the demand of consumers, the United Nations said.

The output is expected to be 27 million tons greater than in 2003, and close to the record production in 1999, with most of the increases notched in Asia, according to the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation.
