Ireland faces a bleak social wasteland limiting growth to private firms unless the lack of investment in public services is reversed, it was claimed today.

Jack O’Connor, SIPTU president, said the blame for the ever-widening gap between rich and poor lay squarely at the Government’s door after years of the lowest social spending in Europe.
