London shares topped the key 4700 barrier today as oil prices slipped back from recent highs and the threat of US and UK interest rate rises receded.

London shares topped the key 4700 barrier today as oil prices slipped back from recent highs and the threat of US and UK interest rate rises receded.

The FTSE 100 Index hit 4701.5 in the first hour before retreating to stand 28.3 points up at 4687.9 by mid-morning.
