Unemployment in Britain has edged up for the first time in almost a year but the number of people claiming jobless benefits has fallen to the lowest level since 1975, new figures showed today.

Unemployment in Britain has edged up for the first time in almost a year but the number of people claiming jobless benefits has fallen to the lowest level since 1975, new figures showed today.

The number of people out of work between March and May rose by 6,000 to 1.43 million – a rate of 4.8%.
