The European Commission has reportedly proposed the harmonisation of tax rates on alcohol throughout the EU, a move that would lead to a reduction in drink prices in Ireland.

Reports this morning said the EC had proposed the move in an effort to curb smuggling and fraud and to end distortion in the internal EU market.
