The Italian government and unions have agreed on a preliminary plan to rescue struggling airline Alitalia, including a management shake-up, calls for fresh funding – and an apparent climbdown over redundancies.

The agreement came at the end of four days of negotiations between the government, which owns 62% of the company, and management and union representatives.
