Irish firms well placed to compete in food sector
Speciality Irish food and drink exporters can take advantage of the UK's growing demand for fine wines and food.
This sector saw a 19% increase in turnover and recorded strong sales growth in 2003, according to the Irish Exporters Association.
The speciality food market is estimated to be worth up to €6bn in Ireland and the UK.
Latest data has shown that Britain is emerging as Europe's number one consumer of fine food and wines, spending over £900 (€1,333) per head per year.
This figure is expected to grow substantially over the next five years.
The Irish Exporters Association, with the support of Bord Bia and Enterprise Ireland fund, has put together an innovative programme which will assist Irish companies in winning sustainable business in the UK market.
Chief Executive, John Whelan said today: "Recent research has shown that British consumers take the lead in Europe in purchases of fine food and drink, spending over £900 (€1,333) per year per head.
"We believe Irish speciality food and drink companies can match the best in taste, quality and authenticity," he added.
Whelan was speaking at the speciality food and drink forum in Cashel, Co Tipperary today.
This forum provides access to two major showcases, one in Ireland and one in Wales, where companies can display their ranges of products and meet with UK buyers.
