'Big Three' want economic commissioner

Britain, France and Germany, known among EU countries as the 'Big Three' - have urged the appointment of an EU commissioner to implement economic reforms to make the bloc the world's most competitive region by 2010.

Prime Minister Tony Blair, President Jacques Chirac and Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder were speaking at a news conference last night following a groundbreaking meeting.
