The total spent by industrial firms on assets such as land and machinery fell by 45% to €822.3m in the third quarter of 2003, from €1496m in the third quarter of 2002.

Figures from the Central Statistics Office (CSO) show that the decline in the third quarter was led by an 80% decrease in purchases of land and buildings, which fell to €142m from €679m.
