London shares moved closer to breaking through the 4500 barrier today, despite a downbeat end to trading in New York.

The FTSE 100 Index rose 19.3 points to 4489.7 in the first hour of trading after racking up gains for an eighth session in a row yesterday – the best run in more than four years.
