Enterprise Ireland has said that competitiveness and innovation should be at the top of the agenda for Irish businesses.

The body's annual report for 2002 said companies supported by Enterprise Ireland hired 11,400 workers last year, but laid off another 16,268, a net loss of 4,868 jobs.
