British Prime Minister Tony Blair and Chancellor Gordon Brown were today combining to launch what is expected to be a long-running campaign to promote a “pro-European consensus” in the UK.

The UK government’s two most powerful figures were holding a rare joint press conference to set out the benefits for the UK of European Union membership, a day after Mr Brown announced that Britain was not yet ready for a referendum on joining the euro.
