Millions of workers from six leading trade unions opposed to privatisation plans launched a nationwide strike today that is likely to hurt India’s ports and its banking, insurance, transportation and mining industries.

“The strike would be something independent India has not seen for a long time,” Gurudas Dasgupta, general secretary of the All India Trade Union Congress, told The Times of India newspaper.
