Market surges ahead

The London market has surged ahead as strong gains from banking and oil stocks caused a much-needed rally.

The FTSE 100 Index closed up 2.5%, 90.1 points stronger at 3669.2, as it continued to come back from the seven-and-a-half year lows touched last month.
