FTSE surges more than 3%

The FTSE 100 Index surged more than 3% ahead today after investors cheered a decision to give breathing space to the battered insurance sector.

Insurance stocks rose sharply and pulled the Footsie ahead to close up 122 points at 3689.4 – its biggest rise in three months.
