The Footsie-100 index has closed up 47 points at 3936.9 after being stuck in a narrow trading range as the City winds down for Christmas.
Among the biggest blue-chip risers were Abbey National, up 20p at 525.5p, Royal Bank of Scotland, up 53p at 1500p, Safeway, up 7p at 204p and Royal & Sun Alliance, up 4.25p at 124.5p.
