United Airlines, reeling from two years of heavy losses, has filed for bankruptcy court protection in Chicago today.

It was by far the largest airline bankruptcy ever and one of the biggest Chapter 11 filings in US history.

United, the world’s second biggest airline, has lost €3.9bn in the last two years due to a slumping economy, flawed business strategies and last year’s September 11 terror attacks.
