Footsie enjoys third-highest percentage surge of all time

The Footsie 100 Index closed up 198.7 at 4130.3 - the third largest percentage rise the index has ever made.

The London market smashed back through the 4000 level as investors piled into shares after being buoyed by a renewed burst of confidence, and gained £47bn by the close.
