Hopes for an encouraging pick-up in Britain’s export markets were dealt a blow today as figures showed the trade gap widened significantly in March.

The goods deficit with the rest of the world slumped to £3bn (€4.8bn) as exports to fellow European Union countries fell by 2.5% and imports climbed by 1.5%.
