Mixed finish for US market

A burst of last-minute bargain hunting has given the US stock market a modest gain.

The Dow Jones closed up 25.67, or 0.3%, at 9,865.75, while the Nasdaq composite index rose 6.22, or 0.3%, to 1,943.92.
