Online bookseller Amazon.com today gave the embattled Internet sector a shot in the arm after it smashed expectations and posted its first ever profit.

The US group reported net income of $5.1m (€5.7m) for the last quarter of 2001, beating expectations and up on the previous year’s net loss of $545.1m (€617m).
