Chancellor Gordon Brown will today say that he is ‘‘cautiously optimistic’’ about the prospects for Britain’s economy.

In a speech to the Confederation of British Industry’s annual conference in Birmingham, he will acknowledge that the events of September 11 will ‘‘inevitably impact’’ on UK.
