Up and down day for Nikkei
The Nikkei 225 index has closed at 10,347.28, down 19.06 points.
Dealers say earlier gains were reversed as investors turned cautious with the corporate results season still continuing.
The dollar was at 122.28 yen in Tokyo trading, down from 122.44 in late New York trade; and at 0.9003 against the euro, compared with 0.8997 in New York.
Government bond yields were higher on profit-taking following yesterday's sharp gains. The 10-year No 234 issue was yielding 1.335%, up from 1.315% yesterday; while the No 233 issue was yielding 1.28%, up from 1.265% previously.
The US 30-year bond was at 107-26/32, yielding 4.875%, compared with 107-21/32 in late New York trade.
