12,000 jobs are to go at worldwide aircraft manufacturer Boeing before Christmas in the first round of cuts prompted by the terrorist attacks.
About 9,000 staff were scheduled to receive 60 day layoff notices today, according to Boeing spokesman Tom Ryan in Seattle.
