Allied Irish Banks has credited a strong performance from its Ireland and UK operations for a 9% jump in first-half profits.

The Dublin-based bank shook off the effects of economic slowdown to record a pre-tax profit for the six months to June 30 of 667 million euros (£409.8m) up from 609 million euros (£374.1m) last year.
