New savings scheme kicks off today

The Minister for Finance is hoping today will see the return of widespread saving.

Offers of the special savings initiative run for the next 12 months, on condition contributions are tied up for a fixed five-year term.

For every £4 saved, the Government will give £1 back to the account-holder.

Minister McCreevy is rejecting criticism that the scheme is unsuitable for the less well off.
