The Footsie index of 100 leading shares slid more than 90 points in early trading as investors took their lead from dives in the US overnight.

The Footsie index of 100 leading shares slid more than 90 points in early trading as investors took their lead from dives in the US overnight.

The index fell by 90.5 points in the first half hour of trading on the London Stock Exchange, although it has now clawed back some of that loss to stand at 5569 after an hour - a fall of 77.8 points.
