China is worried about a US missile defence system deployed in South Korea to head off an attack by the North. What is at stake, asks David Tweed.

A US missile defence system being deployed in South Korea is rubbing China the wrong way.

The Terminal High Altitude Area Defense system (Thaad) is supposed to help South Korea protect itself from a North Korean attack. But China sees Thaad as a threat that will break “the strategic equilibrium in the region”.
