Pre-tax profits at the uniform supply firm that counts gardaí and the Irish Prison Service among its major customers jumped 18% to €824,024 in 2013.

Figures lodged by James Boylan Safety Ltd show pre-tax profits jumped €124,433 after its gross profit rose from €3.42m to €3.81m in the 12 months to the end of December 31, 2013.

The James Boylan Safety Group is a market leader in the supply of safety, uniform, hygiene and specialist products and services to the public and private sector. It operates from Cork, Belfast, Derry, Dublin and its HQ in Monaghan to ensure customer proximity and the group has over 60,000sq ft of warehousing. The firm’s operating profits in 2013 rose 20% from €682,080 to €818,658. The figures show accumulated profits topped €5.8m at the end of December 2013.

Separate figures provided by the Irish Prison Service confirm that the service last year paid €649,662 to James Boylan Safety Ltd for prison staff uniforms.

In 2013, the service paid €595,282 for the supply of uniforms. Separate figures provided by the gardaí show in one quarter alone last year, James Boylan Safety got €419,767 from the Garda for operational equipment.

At the end of 2013, James Boylan Safety Ltd’s cashpile had reduced from €1.93m to €793,403. The pre-tax profit takes account of non-cash depreciation costs of €164,944. Numbers employed by the firm rose from 31 to 33.

Staff costs rose from €1.27m to €1.55m. Remuneration to directors doubled from €78,852 to €159,994.

The accounts show that after paying corporation tax of €124,107, the firm had post-tax profits of €699,917.
