It was a painful parting for him from his sisters and his mother. No doubt he was off to use his health and education to earn a living and add value to another society. He leaves behind sadness and a country that must front up to the job challenges that stand between it and staunching the flow of emigration that haunts our country.

The numbers are fairly simple. At present, about 431,000 people are unemployed in Ireland, representing a rate of 14%. To get it to acceptable levels (let’s assume 5% is effectively full employment) you, I, and the rest of Ireland need to get the unemployed number down by about 284,000.
