Ireland isn’t a large country, but there are massive disparities between economic performance and development across different regions.

This has always been the case, but the disparities have widened over the period of the economic crash and massive social and economic disadvantage is now a feature of some regions.

Back in 2002, amidst great fanfare, the government launched the National Spatial Strategy 2002-2020 in an effort to achieve greater balance across the regions.
