As far as equity markets are concerned, 2013 has started off with a positive bang.

Not surprisingly, the much divided US political system got its act together at the last minute to avoid falling over the fiscal cliff.

Failure to reach agreement would have resulted in an immediate fiscal adjustment package of at least $600bn (€457bn) comprising tax hikes and expenditure cuts.
