Grocery bill rising faster than inflation

The cost of the weekly grocery shop is rising faster that inflation, increasing by 4.1% for the 12-week period ending Oct 28, up from 2.6% in the previous period and the fastest rise since the 4.4% seen in Aug 2011.

Despite the increase in prices, the latest supermarket share figures from Kantar Worldpanel in Ireland for the 12 weeks ending Oct 28 show that the Irish grocery market has grown by 0.1% — the first rise recorded since the Easter boost in April but still a long way behind the inflation rate of 4.1%.

Commercial director at Kantar Worldpanel David Berry said: “While the growth seen this month is a good sign for the grocery market, we are not out of the woods just yet and many grocery retailers are still struggling.
