Aldi ups market share by 26.5%

GERMAN discounter Aldi continues to increase its share of the grocery market at a faster rate than its competitors but Tesco and Dunnes Stores are gaining ground, with SuperValu and Superquinn losing out.

The latest grocery market figures from Kantar Worldpanel in Ireland, for the 12 weeks ending October 2, 2011, indicates that Aldi has pushed its year-on-year market share up by 26.5% to 4.5% of the overall market. The next biggest increase was by Tesco, which increased its share ahead by 3% to a market-leading 27.8%.

Kantar Worldpanel commercial director, David Berry, said that despite prices increasing, the overall market remains subdued, with value sales falling by 0.2% compared with this time last year.
