THE productivity rate of Irish workers is above the EU average but poor investment in innovation, research and education is slowing the country down, according to a report by the European Commission.

The survey measures competitiveness and sets it against investment areas that are believed to help spur growth and create jobs as part of the EU’s economic plan. It shows the work done by Irish employees adds 125% to the value of products compared to just 20% in Bulgaria.

However, it warns Ireland cannot rest on its success, since the days of being able to offer low-paid labour were over.
