ECB president Jean-Claude Trichet has described the situation in the eurozone as the worst crisis since the Second World War.

In his final testimony to the European Parliament before retiring at the end of the month, he said the financial crisis was far from over and eurozone governments need to address it.

“I would say it is their responsibility to face up to the worst crisis since World War Two,” he said. “We are the epicentre of this global crisis.”
