500 computers donated to Africa
The Irish educational charity Camara has just received a donation of 500 computers from PwC Ireland.
Camara collects redundant computers from organisations, refurbishes them and reuses them in educational institutes at home and abroad. The charity has now received more than 1,500 computers from PwC. These are being used primarily in learning centres in sub-Saharan Africa.
PwC director Noel Carroll said: “As part of our corporate responsibility programme, we are delighted to continue our support of Camara’s good work in improving education through technology in Africa. The associated environmental benefits are particularly important to us. We know that these computers will further assist in the education of people in Africa.”
Camara founder and chief executive Cormac Lynch added: “By choosing to reuse their computers in schools to aid education, PwC is making a hugely positive impact to disadvantaged communities in Africa.”
When fully operational, the PwC computers will have helped educate more than 33,000 students. They will also have allowed thousands of adults combat computer literacy through school adult education programmes.
