IRELAND could be facing a double dip recession as economic output shrank unexpectedly in the second quarter.

The shock reversal to negative growth was confirmed by Central Statistics Office (CSO) figures showing GDP fell by 1.25% in the second quarter over the first while GNP dropped 0.3%.

Consumer spending fell by 1.7% compared with the same period last year.
