THE Government must ensure the nitrates directive review will not damage productivity and farming viability, according to Fine Gael.

Phil Hogan TD, the party’s environment spokesman, said the review must take account of many issues including the commercial viability of farming.

In particular, Environment Minister John Gormley should heed the scientific proposals and recommendations that have been put forward by Teagasc.
