‘Construction needs recovery plan’

DESPITE the downturn in construction activity, the sector could still support tens of thousands of new jobs if the Government implemented a recovery plan, according to the Construction Industry Federation (CIF).

The representative body has warned that if no improvement is forthcoming in the sector, Ireland will slip further below the eurozone average when it comes to the economic value of output/construction projects.

According to its latest Public Construction Activity Report, covering March and April, less than €60 million worth of new public construction projects were awarded and no projects were awarded in 28 of the 35 city or county council areas, including Cork, Galway and Limerick.
