THE Common Agricultural Policy is worth over €1 billion to the Irish economy in purely financial terms, but it is possibly three times that figure when the jobs created by the money are taken into account.

Ireland South member of the European Parliament Alan Kelly made the claim ahead of a conference on the CAP which he is hosting at Tipperary Institute in Thurles today.

“If you had a tap pouring that amount of money into another area of the Irish economy we would never stop fighting to protect it.
