THE potential to grow fuel for the transport sector in Ireland will not be exploited unless Government policy specifically works to support the sector, Ireland East MEP Mairead McGuinness has claimed.

She said Ireland has the land, the technology and the need to increase our production of renewable energy. But the project’s potential will not fully be harnessed unless there is a clear statement of commitment from the Government and follow-up action.

“The production of fuel from land was hit by negative publicity in 2007/08 following the rise in grain prices and claims that land was being diverted from food production to fuel production.
