THE Government’s proposed €3.5 billion capital injection into Bank of Ireland has been backed by the European Commission.

In its ruling, the EU Commission said the measure had sufficient safeguards in it to ensure it did not distort competition.

Today beleaguered shareholders of the country’s second largest bank are expected to gather in their hundreds at Dublin’s Savoy cinema to vote on the capital plan.
