Cubic US deal to boost revenue

CORK-based Cubic Telecom has signed a “major” deal with a US social networking site, a move that will help it grow revenue by up to 20%.

The telecom firm is also in talks with a number of Irish, British and US retailers to get its MAXroam product into stores.

MAXroam is a sim card that works by making your phone think it’s at home, no matter where in the world you go. Because it thinks it’s local, you get charged local rates.

After 12 weeks of discussions Cubic beat off competition from firms around the world to have MAXroam available at Dopplr’s online travel shop.

Dopplr is an online networking forum aimed at travellers.

Cubic Telecom’s chief executive Pat Phelan said that the deal was a very big deal for the company and it would help it to significantly grow its revenue.

Cubic had to engage in a bidding process to allow it to be featured by Dopplr, which has 250,000 members worldwide.

“We’re delighted to be working with Dopplr. MaxRoam’s sim card will enable Dopplr travellers to save a minimum of 70% on their mobile travel bills,” said Mr Phelan.

Cubic has been in operation for the last two years and, according to Mr Phelan, the economic downturn is proving to be a good thing for the firm.

“The recession is very good for us, and our product helps people to save money,” he said.
