MET ÉIREANN should be given a role in determining the correct period for spreading slurry on land, says a Co Limerick TD.

Niall Collins made the call after Agriculture Minister Brendan Smith confirmed that the period for spreading livestock manure, which includes farmyard manure and slurry, was extended by Environment Minister John Gormley for a second time to the end of this month.

Mr Collins said this news came as a great relief to farmers who have experienced great difficulty in spreading slurry due to the poor weather conditions.
